A few thoughts on “PERENNIAL  DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME”, or

“You morons are wrecking my sundial”

So………………..once again our politician/businessmen are going to do something really stupid in the name of profit. A long time ago, someone realized that “the early bird gets the worm!” So, folks that juggle finance started getting up earlier to gain an advantage in business. Then, daylight saving time was created. After so many years, it is being proposed to continue to observe daylight saving time on a permanent basis.

The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by U.S. polymath Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage; and calculated considerable savings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time

Most countries now use a form of daylight saving time with only a few exceptions. One of these exceptions is Iran. They conserve daylight by getting up an hour or two earlier. Year around, they “siesta”

"   Year around, most shops close for a couple hours every day around lunchtime, after which it is customary to nap for at least an hour. The day continues late, usually past the midnight hour, as folks are well rested. There are no clocks to alter, no “spring forward, fall back” to remember, no drastic routine changes twice per year. You can look at the position of the sun in the sky and roughly know the hour of the day. In a laid back country where everything is ( فردا ) “worry about it tomorrow”, time is a less precise thing where an hour or two becomes a trivial thing. Most importantly, there is no need for 85.03 million (2021) people to adjust their assorted timepieces twice a year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock

An even longer time ago,( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time) Hipparchus, whose work primarily took place between 147 and 127 B.C., proposed dividing the day into 24 equinoctial hours, based on the 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness observed on equinox days.

https://www.quora.com/What-civilization-was-the-first-to-divide-the-day-into-24-hours

Around 2100 BC, the ancient Egyptians divided the day into 24 hours: one hour for dawn, one for dusk, 10 for day, and 12 for night.

Why did humans choose 24 hours to divide the day into?

The Egyptians and Babylonians are to blame. The ancient Egyptians had a 10 + 2 hour day (they added an hour of dawn and one of twilight) and a 12 hour night. In their system the length of an hour varied with the season’s longer and shorter days.

Thousands of years have formed a consensus that the zero, (or twelve) on a timepiece denotes high noon, or midnight.

When you think about it, perennial daylight saving time does nothing more than change the actual hour that the sun is at zenith, from twelve, to one, on our timepieces. It’s so much easier to just get up an hour earlier, every day, and leave the fucking clocks alone. Then I won’t have to figure out how to “spring forward and fall back” on my damn sundials.

What a horrendously stupid idea. I become increasingly skeptical of human intelligence as time goes by.

                           I probably should end this!
